I first had the idea for this image while at a cafe - the two staff members had made a crown from a cardboard box and were using it as a prop to keep themselves entertained during their shift. It got me thinking about imagination and how it can grow from the smallest, simplest thing. I wanted to create an image that showed a plain space transforming into something more through the imagination. I shot this image against a blank wall in my house and then added the ocean and sky. While I was working on the image I was also reminded of "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak, which inspired me to add a paper boat to the ocean. I left the floorboards of the room at the bottom of the image to show the transition from the everyday to the imaginary world and then added some texture and colour to give the image a soft, dreamy feel.
